If you were hoping to watch NASA's first trip across the skies of Mars on Sunday, don't worry. It's not going to happen.
The first launch of the Ingenuity Mars helicopter has been pushed back to "no sooner than April 14," according to the US space agency. In general, all is fine; NASA is still in contact with the temporarily grounded aircraft. However, there is a logistical issue that must be addressed.
The command sequence monitoring the test ended early due to a 'watchdog' timer expiration during a high-speed spin test of the rotors on Friday, according to NASA's announcement. "This happened when the flight computer was transitioning from 'Pre-Flight' to 'Flight' mode. The helicopter is safe and sound, and it has sent all of its telemetry data to Earth."
The watchdog timer is in place to keep an eye on the mechanisms that enable Earth-based researchers to send orders to the Ingenuity. When it senses a problem, it sounds an alarm. NASA's statement doesn't specify the type of the problem that arose in this situation, but it does say that "the helicopter team is analyzing telemetry to diagnose and understand the question."
As a result, the latest liftoff date is a hazy "no sooner than April 14." It means that NASA expects the problem to be fixed by Wednesday at the earliest, but it could take longer if the topic grounded Ingenuity is more complicated.
It's not easy to troubleshoot technological issues from a distance of more than 172 million miles. That's one of the reasons why launching the Ingenuity into Mars' sky is so difficult. To begin with, the aim of this experiment is to demonstrate that a new type of space exploration is feasible.
In a recent interview with Mashable, Ingenuity mechanical lead Josh Ravich said, "It represents opening up a new avenue of space exploration." "It opens up a lot of possibilities for anybody with an atmosphere, not just Mars." On the surface of Saturn's moon, Titan, there are plans for a similar, drone-led mission to take place one day.
Since Mars is too far out and Ingenuity is the only option on the ground for measuring atmospheric travel beyond Earth's limits, it's much more critical to make sure it is functioning properly. So, though the postponement to April 14 may be frustrating for space lovers everywhere, it is unquestionably for the better.
